Concept Art For Hell

These pieces were drawn up over the reading week break. They are more for myself than anything, as I know this piece is going to be strongly driven by my concept art, therefore would rather spend some time getting it right.

These first two pieces are more along the lines of 'Broken Beauty' than a more conventional Hell we are somewhat visually familiar with. I am pleased with the aesthetic and actual 'look' of the drawings, however, many people I showed the pieces to, had a difficult time trying to pick up what it was that I was trying to convey - More often than not, due to the actual complexity of the idea at an early stage, rather than the image itself.

These 2 images are somewhat similar to the above, but just show a wider and more spacious composition, giving more of an idea what kind of things will be in the 'background' of the environment.

This piece is now along the lines of the more 'Conventional Hell' - the Demons, the fire, the cave like qualities etc. etc. The style is a play off of the old Medieval etchings of Hell, which focused largely on thickness of line. The composition I feel, is very clear and shows a larger area and more depth than the other pieces, although for such a large area like Hell, it is necessary to do somewhat smaller individual drawings to show areas that contain detail that will not be seen in a larger piece.

This final piece is my personal favourite. I would also like to note my intention to work to my strengths - NOT my comforts, when compiling my concepts, in this case, I consider myself better with traditional methods of art (although will be exploring many styles and mediums).
This piece was based of a Medieval Catholic Church homily. The homilies in this era were particularly 'graphic' in attempt for the Church to rob parishioners of their money and save them from the eternal fires of Hell.

After speaking with Alan today, we agreed, to avoid letting this piece become a clichéd mess, it is going to be important to give everything in the piece a meaning or a purpose to be there.
Alan suggested adding in some characters, and giving them their own areas of their own personal Hells. I love the idea (although am trembling at the thought of how much work it could be now!).

Alan also suggested looking through a religious text such as the Bible to get my character or story information from. Being a practising Catholic, even after looking for such things in the Bible earlier this evening, there are very few tales that can give me such vivid visuals I would want. Because of this, I will be looking at Aesop's fables and the Brothers Grimm Fairytale stories, as these have very vivid examples of people making mistakes and suffering due to the consequences.

Another post will explain this in more detail though.
