I was thinking too about some classic Science Fiction with iconic 'assets' - for example, HG Wells The War Of The Worlds - with its famous tripods, but it could be something like War of the Worlds + 1960s = ? so this
You've been thinking of splicing styles and existing worlds, so maybe you could think of a set of existing aesthetics: so
Art Deco + ? Art Nouveau + ? Streamline Moderne + ?
Or, perhaps you could imagine that the culture from which the subject for your project has come has changed; so instead of your chosen subject originating from 'America' - you imagine the results if it in fact originated from China, or the Soviet Union?
It could be as simple as what would the world and its stuff look like if the Nazi's had won the war?
I know you want to design the assets deriving from this new world - the cars, the technologies, the gadgets etc - so you've got to establish a sort of 'world order' or new culture out of which to design your props - the cultural dna that sits inside of everything you design and guides your hand. What you need is a big 'what if?'
